Water Testing and Treatment

201 well drilling contractors list water testing and treatment among their services.

Water testing checks a well sample for the basics, coliform bacteria, nitrates, pH, and hardness, and sometimes for local contaminants of concern like arsenic or radon depending on the area. Water treatment covers the systems installed afterward if a test comes back with an issue: softeners for hardness, filtration for sediment or iron, or disinfection for bacteria.

Private wells aren't tested by any regulator the way municipal water is, so the responsibility sits with the owner. Annual testing is the general baseline, with extra tests after flooding, a nearby spill, or before buying or selling a property. Our water testing guide covers what to test for and how often, and our water softener guide explains when a softener is actually the right fix versus a different treatment system.

Testing itself is inexpensive; treatment systems vary widely by what they're built to remove. See the cost guide for typical ranges on both.
