Canton is the seat of Van Zandt County, which as of July 2026 still has no groundwater conservation district: under the state's rule of capture, County Judge Andy Reese told KLTV, "anybody in Van Zandt County can drill a well and pump as much water out as they want." The commissioners court has now agreed to work with a law firm alongside neighboring counties to form a new multi-county district that would regulate commercial wells (not private ones), a process expected to take at least two years.
